Bhrigu Lake and Trekking in Manali, Friendship Peak

Overview

When you look northwards from Manali town, the highest pinnacle on the white mountain range that closes the valley is Friendship Peak. It looms at an altitude of 17300 ft.  It has been declared a trekking peak by Indian Mountaineering Foundation for trained and professional mountaineers. But for beginners and armature mountaineers it is a bit challenging. One should have prior experience of high altitude trekking (not necessarily of climbing) in Himalayas before going for this peak. On the route to the top you will find all mountain topographic features like moraines, glacier, crevasses etc.

ITINERARY OF FRIENDSHIP PEAK: 5289mts. (17352ft) 

Day 1:-Arrival at Manali

Arrival at the Campsite of Himalayan Mountain Sojourns at Palchan in the forenoon. At lunch there will be a meeting with Guide and HAPs. In the afternoon, after lunch, you can visit the market if you still have something important to purchase for the expedition or you may go for a short acclimatization walk around the campsite. Overnight in rooms at the Campsite of Himalayan Mountain Sojourns at Palchan.

Day 2:- Palchan to Bakar Thach –Approach Camp

From Palchan a Jeep/ taxi takes you to Dhundhi, the road head place which is approximately at an altitude of 9000 feet. Within one hour you will be at Dhundhi. From Dhundhi your trek starts for Bakarthach.

Day 3: – Approach Camp to Base Camp at Lady Leg.

You cross the river Beas to other side and then negotiate a smooth steep slope named ‘Lady Leg’ upward to find a plain meadow on its top. This is the sight for ‘Base Camp’ of Friendship Peak.

 Day 4:- Acclimatization Day at Base Camp.

This is a rest day to get acclimatized here, though you can keep yourself busy in little handy work of preparation for the summit next morning.

 Day 5:- Summit Attempt.

This is the ‘big’ day for you. You start as early as 3 am or 4 am in the morning.  It is a full day ascend and descend. If weather remains favorable you could be on the summit by noon. After passing few ecstatic moments on the top you descend down to the Base Camp.

Day 6:- Reserve Day

Reserve Day for Summit Attempt. If already successful team will go for a day hike to Beas Kund Lake. Beas Kund is a small pool like lake the lies on the other side of the mountain ridge. Beas Kund basin is ‘base camp’ for peaks like Hanuman Tibba, Shitidhar, Ladakhi, Manali Peak and Makerbeh and Shikherbeh.

Day 7:- Base Camp to Palchan

Base Camp to Apple Orchard Camp of Himalayan Mountain Sojourns at Palchan. After breakfast you start your downward trekking to Dhundhi from where you will be picked by vehicle to take you to Palchan. Overnight in rooms at the Campsite of Himalayan Mountain Sojourns at Palchan.

Day 8:- Departure

You have free time till lunch. After lunch you will be dropped at Manali Bus Station to board bus for your next destination.

Necessary items to bring

  • High Ankle trekking shoes and paor of woolen socks.
  • One pullover.
  • One wind proof jacket, poncho(rain sheet).
  • Torch, sun glasses. Sun cream, personal medicines.
  • Make your luggage small and light weight as porter to carry personal luggage is not included in the package.
  1. All meals from Manali to Manali. (Vegetarian Food only), Except Breakfast on arrival day and dinner on departure day.
  2. Tents, Sleeping Bags, and Mattresses.(Four Sharing Tents)
  3. All necessary Technical Gear-Ropes, Carabineers, Ice-axe, climbing shoes, gaiters etc.
  4. Two High Altitude Mountain Guides.
